HairBall Hits Casselman’s November 9
by Tim Wenger
Hairball is rolling their hair-metal party circus into Casselman’s Bar and Venue in Denver on November 9. If you are not familiar with these guys (you are definitely familiar with their music, the songs they cover have been all over the place for over 20 years), their free-wheeling party atmosphere and rock and roll vibes are sure to put a smile on your face. Colorado Music Buzz caught up with Freaky, the band’s energetic bass player, to get the lowdown on these high flyers.
CMB: First things first. Give us a description of who HairBall is and what you guys do.
F: Hairball is hard to describe. We don’t really fit into any existing category. So we came up with our own description… A Bombastic Celebration of Arena Rock. We represent a day when MTV played videos from Rock bands. Blake, our drummer, Happy, our lead guitarist and mouth-piece and myself are the core of the band. Joe, Kris and Bob slap each other around in the dressing room until someone ends up coming out on stage looking like Axl Rose or David Lee Roth or perhaps Prince! Add a lot of bombs, fire, smoke, blood, sweat & tears and a few thousand screaming freaks that expect to see a spectacle that will take them on a journey they’ve never been on before and you’ve got just a small start of what Hairball is about.
CMB: Does the show leave room for a “margin of error,” so to speak, such as improv or fan requests, or is it pretty set in stone, more like a play?
F: Nothing is ever set in stone! Other than the fact that you will leave with a huge smile on your face and wanna crank Van Halen and do 90 on the way home!
CMB: How did the band originally come together to create this act?
F: Over the course of 13 years. For the most part, we all grew up playing in bands and working in clubs together in the Minneapolis area. In fact, most of our crew are friends from the trenches. Hairball started as a goof. A good-natured spoof of some of the sillier moments from the ’80s. As members came and went over the years the band just naturally evolved into a real rock show. Now it’s just a freakin’ monster with a mind of its own. We just try to hang on!
CMB: What is road life like for you? Is it wild and crazy, or more of a routine these days?
F: Again, nothing is set in stone or ever the same. Sometimes it’s a boring bitch of a time riding in a cold, rattling, windy RV for 10 hours to play a 2 and a half hour show turn around and drive that 10 hours again. Not complaining, just saying sometimes that can suck. However, sometimes we get to whatever city and stay in the RV in the parking lot until the sun comes up – just hanging out drinking milk and such.
Sometimes after our show we end up at a local bar. That always starts out great! The bar owner and staff are really nice and buy us a drink or two and by closing time they wished they’d never met us! Ha ha! It’s hard to keep track of 6 band guys and kick ’em out at closing time.
It’s always different and I think that’s one of the reasons we all like doing this so much. You never know what’s going to happen. Not on the way there, not during the show, and not on the way home. It’s always a good time with good friends and how can you not love that?!
CMB: Should fans dress up like their favorite rock stars for the event?
F: Oh heavens yes! Dress up like ANYTHING when you come to our show. If ever there were an event where you can be completely whoever you want to be – even come alone dressed as a martian, it’s all good! The weirder the better! People always ask around this time of year what we have planned for Halloween. Shooooooot, everyday is Halloween for Hairball!
CMB: Where can we find your music online?
F: We have one song recorded! It’s called Make Some Noise. iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, etc… all have it for download. You can find out the story on that on our website. HairballOnline.com
CMB: Any last words?
F: My last words are as follows and I quote…Stink…Stank…Stunk!
