15th Annual Underground Music Showcase Hits Broadway July 23-26
In the Denver music scene, the third weekend in July is one of those weekends that takes some preparation. Bands from around the city and a select lucky handful of hard hitters from around the country prepare their finest set lists and tighten up any loose ends in their songs. The bars and clubs along South Broadway cram their liquor rooms and beer coolers to the brim, and call upon their finest bartenders to work four consecutive long, hot, and loud, days. Around the city music fans, tourists, artists, spouses, the general public and musicians themselves in turn prep their ears (and livers) for the largest music festival the Mountain Time Zone has to offer.
The Denver Post Underground Music Showcase, July 23-26, stretches along Broadway as far south as Club 404 and as far north as Illegal Pete’s. Now in its 15th year, The UMS will showcase over 400 bands from Denver and beyond in bars, galleries, clubs, and one of Denver’s most iconic churches. Basically, it’s Denver’s version of South By Southwest- but not nearly as corporate and spoiled. A festival pass gets you a wristband granting access to all participating venues. The venues are walkable, and out on the street between clubs is where some of the best action takes place- people in costumes, buskers- just about anything can be seen.
Those involved in the music industry can attend panel discussions, connect with artists face to face while walking Broadway, and get a dose of just about everything Denver has to offer musically. Fans have the opportunity to see more bands in four days than they will likely see the rest of the year in small, intimate settings that truly put the raw talent of the performers on display.
If this all sounds a little overwhelming, don’t fret- The UMS has developed an app to help you manage your time and catch the acts you want to see. This year’s festival will benefit The Denver Post Community Foundation and Youth On Record. Head to theums.com for more information.
