Higher Ground Music Festival Artist Preview: The Outer Vibe
by Tim Wenger
Higher Ground Music Festival artist The Outer Circle talks the process of their record Full Circle and share their thoughts on coming out of Grand Rapids.
CMB: First things first. Give us the story of the band.
The namesake The Outer Vibe has been around for over 10 years; Sean Zee (Vox) and Nick Hosford (Guitar) being the founding members. Since then TOV has released 3 Full-Length albums and an EP to the public, continuing to experiment with different band members and soundscapes. With the addition of the newest member Noah Snyder (Drums) the band took the change as an opportunity to redefine their sound and sculpt something new and original with the tool-kit they collected over the years. The butterfly emerged its cocoon with the endearing title: Cinematic Surf-Disco.
CMB: How was the process of gaining traction in Grand Rapids? Is the scene there very supportive, or have you guys felt that you’ve had to claw your way up?
Grand Rapids is a very supportive and encouraging city to live in and our fans there have given us the energy to perfect our art to the point that we are thrilled to unleash it to the hungry ears of the US. We look forward to being recognized not only as a great local band, but also as a top national touring act. We love Grand Rapids, but we are loyal to the roads and cities and beautiful people all over the country.
CMB: Other than HGMF, what is The Outer Vibe up to this year?
We are very excited to launch a nationwide tour in support of Full Circle in cities all over the country including Indianapolis, Nashville, Rapid City, and Los Angeles (our whole tour schedule is listed at www.theoutervibe.com/#shows). We are stoked to share the stage with artists such as Young the Giant, St Vincent, and AWOLNATION this September during Fashion Meets Music Festival. We are excited to drive around the country in our van and show the world this album that we are very proud of and play some shows that blow the pants off the audience.
CMB: Talk about the making of Full Circle. How was the recording process, how does your song writing process work, and hiccups in the production or release that you guys had to deal with?
The album is called Full Circle because we stopped trying to be something we weren’t, and started playing music that makes us happy; it is the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one. Working with Brad Dollar (The National, Grateful Dead) allowed us to pass over some of the responsibility for the technical side of things and help us to be a band that tracks things live together and captures the magic and energy that is The Outer Vibe. Full Circle is actually influenced by some of the time we spend in the studio. The countless Pina Coladas even made it on to the back cover.
