Look- I don’t want to beat a dead horse here. I hate U2. I will never understand why Rolling Stone feels the need to force-feed every aspect of Bono’s life down my throat, every two weeks, like I’m some sort of push-pin who forgot how cool it is to wear sunglasses to a dinner party.
Here at CMB, we’ve written about the Potato Pirates more than a few times now. I know that there are a lot of good bands in Denver. But there are only two bands that I will repeatedly praise in these pages every time they make a move because they are the two that actually deserve it. One of those bands is the Potato Pirates. Their new album Raised Better Than This, out October 7 on Warbird Entertainment, is the best thing we have to look forward to this election season. Not many bands can express frustration, heart break, and anxiety with a sarcastic smile behind a brutal “fuck you,” and then flip the switch to a light hearted drinking song without the slightest hint of irony, but the Potato Pirates have that science down pat. They have, with their third full length album, taken everything that is appealing about punk rock music and stamped it with their own mark of mile high magic and it is, in a word (or two), fucking amazing. It is great to see they haven’t shied away from the bagpipes, either. I was more excited during our first listen of the album than I have been since the late-season powder days of last winter.
CMB is on board with the Potato Pirates, to the point that when Vinny Capaldo-Smith pleads us to get our hipster shit out of their city, we’re ready to run down South Broadway with a blowtorch and start burning scarves.
