Kara McGraw-The Hound & The Hare
by Tim Wenger
San Francisco artist Kara McGraw is doing something different with her new record The Hound & The Hare. “The album has thirteen songs, and it’s raising money for thirteen charities,” McGraw says. “Each song has its own charity.” The fundraising is taking place over the course of thirteen weeks, with each song having a week to raise money for its charity. “I donate $1 per record, and if you donate each song individually, all profits from the song will go to the charity,” McGraw says. On her website, karamcgraw.com, there is a link describing each charity in detail with a link to donate.
The album itself has two sections, an A side and a B side. “I laid it out this way because I was choosing from a large body of work for this album,” Mcgraw says. “I wrote this music over a span of ten years, and during those ten years I had an opportunity to explore a whole lot of different genres.” McGraw’s music is very emotional, singer-songwriter style composition; seemingly perfect for the charities she is raising money for.
Due to amount of time spent writing the album, the division into two parts helps channel the focus of the songs. “On some levels I wanted to feature some of my more boisterous, outgoing extroverted work,” she says. “But I also wanted to include some of my more introverted pieces, so I ended up dividing the album into two parts.”
“I like to say that it’s sort of like a person, it has an outer self and an inner self,” McGraw says. The piano parts on the record were recorded in Vermont on McGraw’s parent’s grand piano, with the rest being recorded in San Francisco.
