Donald Spence of Versus The World on New Record, Touring with Unwritten Law
by Tim Wenger
Yesterday, Colorado Music Buzz posted an interview that we did with Scott Russo of Unwritten Law. Today, we spoke with Donald Spence of Versus The World, who bring their hardcore/pop-punk stylings into the Gothic Theater on Saturday, November 17. He gave us the inside info on their new record Drink. Sing. Live. Love. and their current tour.
CMB: Talk about the process of writing and recording Drink. Sing. Live. Love., and how happy are you guys with how it turned out?
DS: The writing process is always pretty fun. Chris and I built a studio in my back yard for us to rehearse and do preproduction stuff so making songs is super casual, fun and relaxed. Everyone just cruises over, we’ll have a couple drinks or a smoke and just play music. We really took our time with the recording, we recorded in our hometown so there was very little pressure or stress. We love how it turned out. I think the songs are great.
CMB: What are your best markets, and how does Denver compare to them?
DS: We do very well over seas, home is where we really have to work hard. Which is fine, it keeps us focused and humble. Colorado is always a good spot for us, we have friends there and the people are rad. I have no complaints.
CMB: How has it been touring with MXPX Allstars and Unwritten Law?
DS: It’s been awesome! We’ve played a lot of shows with unwritten law in the past so we knew those dudes, were friends with Mike Herrera too so there wasn’t a getting used to everyone period. It just started out as a tour of old buddies, which is awesome. It makes every night feel like a party.
CMB: What are your plans following this tour?
DS: We’re home for 10 days then we ship off to Japan. We have another US run in the works and were booked for sound wave festival in Australia in the spring. We won’t be home that much this year, but that’s a good thing. We need to keep working.
