Artist Spotlight: Del Hayes
by Max Giffin
“Inspiration comes at the weirdest times,” says Del Hayes, a local musician from Fort Collins, Colorado. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter has been playing guitar since he was 11, and says that music is his artistic outlet for emotions. Hayes’ music can be described as folk rock played on an acoustic guitar, and adorned with beautiful poetic lyrics. The lyrical aspects of his songs are both thoughtful and intelligent. “Usually I write a story,” he says, “and the songs come out of that.” Clearly wise beyond his years, the young artist shows great insight through his songs, and his art portrays his understanding of the world. “Starry Eyed Woman” talks about love and the human connection; whereas, “Beautiful Mind” is a reflection on life and his own interpretation of the world.
Part of Hayes’ musical ability can be attributed to his mother, a talented jazz singer, who raised him in a house full of music. Since a young age, Hayes has sung in choirs and surrounded himself by sound. Middle school was when he began to write his own songs; and in turn, it was when he realized the passion he held for what he was doing. Guitar shifted from being a hobby to being a lifestyle, and he began his continuing journey as a musician, a journey he believes is still only beginning. Hayes says that he is always growing as a musician and will always be growing.
Although most of his music to date is solo, featuring only him and his guitar, Hayes hopes to eventually expand into music by getting a band together. His sounds often grace the listeners of local Fort Collins radio, KRFC, where Hayes frequently plays live. Although he has no studio recordings yet, he is a local favorite among the indie scene due to his wonderful live performances. Local coffee shops are where he plays most of his sets. He’s constantly posting information about these small shows on his Facebook page, which can be found by searching ‘Del Hayes’.
Hayes recently recorded some live footage of him playing the song “Beautiful Minds” down by the Poudre River in Fort Collins that can be found on the Colorado Music Buzz Website: www.coloradomusicbuzz.com
