Be Brave-Medicine for Mistakes
by Jenn Cohen
Medicine for Mistakes is the latest CD from Denver locals, Be Brave. Made up of Evan Bell (vocals), Tommy Trent and Mike Payne (guitar), Brett Marcovich (bass), and Matt Neiberger (drums), their sound is both familiar (think Fall Out Boy and Jack’s Mannequin), as well as unique.
After a quick intro, the seven-song-soundtrack-for-summer takes off with the title track, “Medicine for Mistakes,” which begins with the short, choppy riffs that remain consistent throughout the album.
Lyrically, Be Brave encompasses many of the trademark emotions of youth: angst, sadness, and those fleeting moments of happiness. In “Breathe,” there is a solid message to hang in there, “Keep your heart wide open, even when the sky is falling down.” “Poppin Bottles” is my favorite, “Cigarettes and alcohol, we’re just young kids after all . . . don’t be surprised if I don’t know your name by the end of the night.” It takes me back to a time in my own youth when everything centered on just having fun.
Look for Be Brave to help us close out the summer at the Higher Ground Music Festival Aug.24-26
