The fresh baked brownie as you just start a diet, the new guy or girl at the office with a dab of dreamy cologne, the shiny new motorcycle and no money, and yes, the lead singer or lanky bass player in some new band; these tasty temptations in whatever form that keep us preoccupied in the daylight hours. Everyone has something they want that makes no sense whatsoever to the practical conversations that fill our lives.
We pray in church “lead us not into temptation” and then buy the magazines loaded with the bodies we want, the instruments we know would make us better players, the cars that would make our lives more fun, and all the while these dreams, these simple dreams make our reality a bit harder, dull in fact. The quest begins for the joy of obtaining the new dream and suddenly you are on the treadmill and starving to slim down knowing your life will be this glorious fantasy in your skinny jeans, as everyone will desire you. You find yourself working two jobs or taking all the overtime you can get, as you now must have that car, guitar, turn table, or hunk of technology. Now your seemingly dull life is full of stress or lack of sleep, but you have a goal in mind and a timeline to achieve it. He will notice me if I am thin, he will love me if I am thin… I will be so sexy in my new car, the women will come, the women will come.
We are all guilty of temptation and these guilty pleasures do come at a price, often it is money, but in the realm of humanity, ask “Is the price too dear?” If it costs your dignity, your fidelity, your values, or will your quest hurt someone else? The New Year is here, and radical honesty is a great place to start, honesty with yourself and the ones you love in your life. Is the thing you desire going to make your life better, and in the process cause no harm to anyone else? What will you need in your first aid kit to get you through your journey: lots of water, an alarm, vitamins, earplugs, a sense of humor, and a confidant. We all want, often it is that desire that moves us forward, gives life flavor, and allows us to contribute art, music, knowledge, love, laughter, friendship, and color…
