Booomclap Brings their Experimental Beats to Colorado
by Sarah Smith
Booomclap, a duo formed two years ago in Oklahoma, stars Chris Combs on guitar, lap steel, synth and keys and Josh Raymer on drums. I was lucky enough to catch them for one of their shows on the Colorado run, at Quixote’s True Blue. Booomclap has a solid jazz undertone combined with electronic grooves and samples, putting the duo in a genre all their own. They provide an improvised, existential dance party that moves through jazz, hip-hop, funk, and even a bit of rock. Booomclap has been compared to other duos such as Eoto and Big Gigantic, but they are truly a sound all their own and most certainly fall into the category of experimental music. Regardless what genre Booomclap was passing through, it was obvious the goal was to keep the crowd dancing! My favorite parts of the show were their jazz sections, which truly highlights the knowledge Booomclap gained through their membership at the Tulsa Jazz Institute. Booomclap is a fun, up-beat dance party that will keep you thinking about the music as much as it keeps you dancing. I look forward to hearing the upcoming album from Booomclap which is rumored to be released sometime in 2014. In the meantime, check out Booomclap’s SoundCloud for a preview of what’s to come and their recently released mixtape!
