The Ogden Theatre might not be the best or the biggest venue in Denver, but it’s sure as hell one of my favorites. I’ve come to realize that smaller venues have a certain vibe associated with them, and when you get you to see one of your favorite bands in that kind of environment, it’s pretty freaking special.

I had the opportunity to see Chevelle, a band that I have been following since their second album Wonder What’s Next came out, and their single, “The Red” was all over the radio. Since then, this three-person band from Chicago has been on my radar, and I have always wanted to see them live. On Wednesday night I walked into a packed house full of Chevelle fans. The line to get their T-shirts and their newest album was longer than the line to the bar, and I could sense the excitement and anticipation of the patrons around me as the night got started.

TurboGeist warmed up the crowd, and the punk-metal band from London, England played loud and fast in what seemed like a short set. They left the stage and their banner dropped during take down, to reveal Chevelle’s banner, which led to a brief moment of screaming and hollering from the crowd. Once Chevelle took the stage, they opened their set with “Shameful Metaphors” off the album Sci Fi Crimes. Front man, Pete Loeffler started in with “Hats off to the Bull,” off of their latest album of the same name. The audience sang the song word for word and Loeffler laughed as he said, “You know this one?)”

As the night continued on, Chevelle seemed to play every hit song they’ve ever had including, “I Get It” off of Vena Sera and “Letters From A Thief” off of Sci Fi Crimes, albums that haven’t been out too long. Eventually they started playing older hits like “Vitamin R” and “The Clincher” from This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In.) However the night really got good when they played “The Red” and the smash hit “Face to the Floor” from Hats Off to the Bull. Before long though, this amazing show was over and the crowd emptied onto Colfax, breathless from the performance that Chevelle just put on. The crowd was electric the whole time and for good reason, that was a damn good show.
