Colorado Music Hall of Fame Honors Harry Tuft and Barry Fey
by Torch
The evening was a who is who of the local music scene. Chuck Morris threw an elegant evening event full of famous faces, local news, and paparazzi. The music guests included Firefall, Otis Taylor, Chris Daniels, Molly O’Brian, Rich Moore, Kenny Passarelli, Rob Drabkin, Dick Weissman, Freddie Gowdy, Rick Roberts, and more. Tuft even did a bit of yodeling in the song “In the Jailhouse Now” with his band Grub Steak.
Nick Forster, founder of eTown and co founder of Hot Rise, introduced Tuft and presented him with a plaque commemorating the evening. The tribute to Tuft was kind and classy including some old time folk music. A dapper dressed Tuft changed out of his tux jacket during his speech, revealing his usual pullover sweater, and casual demeanor. He spoke of the time mark coming up of the 50th anniversary of the Denver Folklore Center. Tuft is also the founder of Swallow Hill Music, which continues to educate and promote folk, bluegrass, and community-involved music. After his acceptance speech, he joined many friends on stage for some heartfelt fun and ended his set with “It’s a Wonderful World.”
G. Brown showed a video that was more of a roast than a toast to Barry Fey. It would have been more appropriate to honor all that Fey brought to the Colorado music scene, being, most all of, the major bands who have since made history; including, but not limited to: the Who, U2, the Rolling Stones, the Doors, Janice Joplin, Metallica, Guns and Roses and on and on. He is one of the greatest concert promoters of all time, and his position in the Colorado Music Hall of Fame is well deserved. Comedian, Vet, and former head of security for Barry Fey, Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald, introduced Fey with kind words, shared some fun memories, and, along with Chuck Morris, presented Fey with his plaque. Morris even hugged Fey and gave him an endearing kiss on the head. Fey spoke of all the great musicians we’ve lost to drugs, ending with Whitney Houston who passed only the night before. In true Barry-Fey style, he wore shorts, a wine-colored jacket, and a Jim Morrison t-shirt to the event. He gave thanks to wives past, and his children and grand children who accompanied him.
The stage was packed with players, led by Chris Daniels, who sang the Rolling Stones song, “Satisfaction” for Barry, who started the place dancing. The evening was a huge success, and artifacts and information will be on display at the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.
