Current Swell Drops New Record, Hits Colorado This Weekend
by Tim Wenger
Victoria, BC’s Current Swell have dropped a new record and are bringing it along with their live show to the Mile High City tonight. This is the band’s first big US headlining tour.
“We’re breaking a bit of new ground here,” says front man Scott Stanton. “To come down and do our own shows and see what fans got out here and see what we can do, and have some fun like that, it’s totally worth it.”
Their new record long time ago is the most technical offering the band has released, both musically and in terms of the recording. “It was our fourth effort, so we felt like we had a better idea of what we wanted to do,” says Stanton. “We wanted to focus a little bit more on the songwriting side, and on the craft of songwriting, instead of just slapping the songs together. I think we did a pretty good job with it.”
The disc has a touch of singer-songwriter flavor to it, mixed with folk rock and, in the words of Stanton, “a coastal influence.” It crosses genre lines, appealing to jam fans and rock fans of a light and slightly heavier persuasion.
The band’s first big break in the US was opening for Dispatch. “That was the funnest time ever,” says Stanton. “We did a run down the west coast with them. Getting to know them and opening for them, that was our biggest break in getting into the US market.” Their current tour closes with dates at SXSW in Austin, TX, with international tours to follow.
Catch them tonight at Black Sheep in Colorado Springs and Saturday at Marquis Theatre in Denver, $10, all ages.
