Dave Matthews Band/Snoop Dogg at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park
by Ryan Edwards
I’ve come to realize that there are some musicians that have such a huge following that they have to play at larger venues, no matter what. On a Saturday night in Commerce City, myself and many other music lovers found ourselves watching and listening to two very different styles of music that somehow fit well together. SnoopDogg, a rap legend and Dave Matthews, an acoustic jam band with a colt like following don’t have much in common when it comes to their musical styles, but what I noticed that night is that I’m not the only music lover with an eclectic music taste. As I walked into Dicks Sporting Good’s Park, which is home to the MLS team, the Colorado Rapids, I found myself in the most diverse group of people that I have ever seen at one concert. And as patrons really started to poor in and Snoop Dogg came on stage, it was clear from the beginning that not only the younger crowd was going to enjoy the beginning of the show. Every song that Snoop played was a hit and he seemed to mix a lot of his songs together, which sounded amazing. Whether it was older songs like “The Next Episode.” “Gin and Juice,” “Nuthin But a G Thang” or newer hits like “Drop it like it’s hot,” every song was a blast and sounded amazing on the PA system. As the show went on, Snoop Dogg even paid tribute to other musician’s and got literally everyone in the stadium jumping to House of Pain’s song “Jump Around,” which honestly was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a show. Afterward Snoop Dogg showed another side of himself as he finished up the night with Wiz Khalifa’s song “Young, Wild and Free,” a tribute to how he felt about Colorado that night he said. Afterwards, as the sun had gone down, The Dave Matthews Band came on stage to a huge uproar of excitement. Right away feeling the crowd’s energy and playing many of their hit songs like “Satellite” and “Ants Marching,” which both songs came off of their album Under the Table and Dreaming. Also Dave Matthews showed his appreciation for classic rock as they covered
“Don’t Fear the Reaper” by the Blue Oyster Cult and later on playing more catchy songs like “Why I Am,” and often going into long jamming sessions in the middle or end of their performances throughout the night, which makes The Dave Matthews Band who they are. As the night came to a close and as I sat in my truck waiting to get out of parking lot, I felt satisfied knowing that I had an opportunity to see two completely different iconic musicians for the first time on the same night.
