The Denver School of the Arts’ (DSA) Vocal Music Department is the premier education curriculum for 6-12 grade students seeking exceptional vocal training and academic achievement. DSA’s Vocal Music program attracts students from all over the Denver metro and Front Range communities because of its reputation and proven track record for artistic and academic excellence. Music majors account for one-third of the students at DSA, and Vocal Music is the largest department at DSA serving more than 150 students annually.
DSA’s Vocal Music Department is run by two highly accomplished professionals, Scott Shively and Robert Styron, who have 14 years and 8 years respectively of teaching experience at DSA, as well as experience with other premier national music education programs. After the required audition and acceptance, students are placed in one of four choirs and receive rigorous, pre-conservatory instruction, including vocal technique, choral methods, sight singing, music theory and more.
Founded in August 1991, DSA is home to over 1,000 students and 11 arts majors. US News and World Report ranked DSA as one of the top 10 public high schools in Colorado in 2011 — and the best among all of DPS. With nearly a 100 percent graduation rate, approximately 125 graduating DSA seniors in 2011 are going to college or conservatory, and were collectively awarded more than $14 million in scholarships. DSA is a DPS magnet and the only school in the region that focuses equally on academic and arts excellence.
