Since releasing their debut album Way of the Fist in 2007, Five Finger Death Punch have exploded across the American metal scene, finding fans world wide, who are hungry for their unapologetic, in-your-face sound. On April 12, the band, whose lead vocalist Ivan Moody is a Denver native, will be playing to a packed house at the Casper Events Center just up in the road in windy Wyoming. Drummer and co-founder of the band, Jeremy Spencer, sat down to talk about the award-winning band’s recent successes, and the new album American Capitalist.
“Well, the whole idea about American Capitalist is that capitalism is a system that is similar to nature, where only the strong survive, and that’s the real crux of the album. We want our music to be a reflection of that; where people will hear this, and fight for what’s theirs, and work hard to achieve their dreams, whatever they may be,” says Spencer.
Outsiders classify Five Finger Death Punch, best known to their fans as 5FDP, as a heavy-metal band, but as Spencer explains, they hope to appeal to a larger audience with their lyrics and strong structure. Their sound is definitely heavy, but intelligently so; reflecting current events, and cultivating the emotion contained in public reaction to war, politics, and human nature. 5FDP offer their fans a release in the punchy drumbeats, ironic lyrics, and potent guitar solos. If your boss, girlfriend, neighbor or parents get under your skin, a few tracks from 5FDP will be sure to release your upset, and get you back under control; just like any good metal song should.
A former member of WASP, Spencer has been with 5FDP since the beginning when he founded the band with Zoltan Bathory in 2005, and is excited to be playing out West. He finds the fans out here in the Rockies–specifically Denver, Rock Springs and Littleton–to be: “incredible. We have amazing fans in that area, Wyoming as well. Some of the best 5FDP fans around.”
American Capitalist is, for many Five Finger fans, the epitome of the group’s message. According to Spencer, that message or “mission statement” is reflected in track three of the album. “There’s a lyric in “The Pride” track ‘only the strong survive’…. I think that probably sums it up. Only the strong survive, so be strong.”
5FDP have opened and toured with other rock legends Korn, Disturbed, and Slipknot. Opening for them in Casper are rocking new bands Soulfly, and Windowpane. Casper Events Center is expected to house a few thousand metal fans this April 12, and tickets are on sale now. Five Finger Death Punch is a heavy band with lyrics that appeal to every American, making them totally worth a road trip, or even just a download. Disappointment is not in the lineup.
