G.O.A.T- Interview
by: Darnell Teague & Jonathan McNaughton
CMB: Who is G.O.A.T?
G.O.A.T: Hahaha, I have to answer this in third person, but G.O.A.T is a once-in-a-lifetime artist. He goes out and gives it his all and puts 110% into his music and projects–a very unique sound for hip-hop ears. Some people could take the name wrong, and if they do, good! But my name is not to put or place myself above anyone: artist, entertainers, or whatever people call themselves these days, it’s more of a statement for myself, and the goals I have. We are all individuals, and there will never be anyone like G.O.A.T ever again. We all have special talents and gifts, and mine are music, and entertaining the world, and I have to be the greatest at those things. So that is where the name G.O.A.T stems from…
CMB: What is your definition of hip hop?
G.O.A.T: Expressing yourself to the world, giving people an image of who you are, and what you want to become. A lot of artists have their own definition of hip hop, but I believe that everyone can agree that it is an expression of who you are as a person. Fans will even tell you that if they find out that an artist that they listen to is not about “that life” they talk about in their music, automatically, that artist is looked at in a whole different light–even if the music is John-Blaze HOT! The fans won’t respond to it like they normally would. What I’m trying to say is be your self! #JediLife.
CMB: What inspired the #MileHighClub Project?
G.O.A.T: A deal! Last October, I was able to sign with JMD/Universal Music. From there, the ideas started to all come together on how to put my next project out, and how to market it as “Colorado Music” along with Bill Kushinton and the #JediLife Alliance. Everything else was just uphill from there. Just being around Hyp-Hop Sells, D-Re’ll, F.T. da Future, and T.E.X gave me a lot to material to work on, you have to understand being around those guys on a regular basis keeps you on your toes. Everyone has their own musical genius, and with being around that 24/7, it rubs off on you. So I had to come with something that shook the cage! I’m a Jedi, expect nothing less.
CMB: When did you first start making music?
G.O.A.T: Awe Mane! A minute now, I‘ve been writing since the 7th grade just on some “Cool and Smooth” type sh#t and figured out that I was actually pretty good! As the years went on in high school, I really became noticed for two things:bBasketball and music, and I just leaned more toward music because it lets me be me at all times, and allows me to express my creative side like no other. I thought that was pretty dope! And now, at 25, I’m glad I made that move.
CMB: Where in Colorado did you grow up?
G.O.A.T: BELL-SIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I have to represent hard where I spent most of my time growing up and that’s Montbello. From MLK middle school days to Montbello High School years, I had great times my man, great times. It has definitely made me the man you see today, you can never forget where you come from, EVER. And I take that to heart, and keep that motto circulating around my head 24/7 365, because without that foundation there would never be a G.O.A.T
CMB: Why should people listen to your music?
G.O.A.T: G.O.A.T has personality. A lot of music that is out now sounds like the next man’s music; there are artists who do not like to step out of the box and sound like themselves, and I’m never afraid to be classified as different. Plus, I’m from a city that no one has heard of yet, and, damn it, I’m light skinned, hahaha. Don’t call it a comeback, we been here for years! There are a lot of reasons to listen to the music; as listeners, you just have to form your own ideas of G.O.A.T and tell your reason to your friends, and tell your friends to listen to G.O.A.T is how I see it #Moxie.
CMB: What does 2012 and the future hold for G.O.A.T?
G.O.A.T: Well if the world doesn’t end, ha-ha, it holds a lot for me. I have so many things planned for 2012. A lot of work will be put into getting my name out there for people to get use to seeing the name G.O.A.T, from the videos, mix-tapes, and shows. I will be busier this year than I ever have been in previous year,s and with God’s help it will all pay off #Determined.
