Gypsy House Café

There are many establishments in Denver that support Denver’s hip-hop community. In addition to Cervantes, Meadowlark, Casselman’s, Tooey’s, and the Living Room, I was recently guided to the Gypsy House Café.
The café is more than a coffee/tea house with a delicious menu of homemade food. This little red building on the corner of 13th and Marion, (with on-street parking), is also a hookah bar, and host to a variety of open-mic nights, including poetry, comedy, and music.
Tapestries adorn the inside, along with an eclectic medley of warm Eastern furnishings. Lebanese sisters own the café, and on the day I visited, their mom, known as “Gypsy Mamma” to regulars, greeted me with the warmth that only a mamma could provide. She talked with me as if we’d been friends for years, sharing stories about her grandson, and smiling throughout our conversation.
Perhaps the best-kept secret of the Gypsy House Café is the huge open living room in the basement. Complete with couches along all the walls, and coffee tables throughout, this is the living room where the open-mics happen. Freedom of Speech, a poetry night hosted by Lady Speech, provides a non-threatening environment for both novices and professionals alike, who want to test their skills and make possible alliances. And you can reserve the basement for free, as long as you’re buying food and drinks from the café.
