Hi-Dive—Venue of the Month

Venues like the Hi-Dive, have not been around long, but like many other intimate venues around town, they have made a name for themselves. The Hi-Dive took the place of Quixote’s True Blue, in 2004, and is owned and operated by Matt LaBarge, a New York native, who wanted to bring a taste of the east-coast music scene to Colorado. This 18+ venue opened its doors to allow music lovers of all ages to come and enjoy solid, live music at a legit venue.
While the Denver music scene continues to explode, the Hi-Dive has become an establishment that musicians and music lovers flock too, showcasing both local and national acts. One local band, A Mouth Full of Thunder, has played at the venue many times, and lead singer Steve, has played since the bar opened as the Hi-Dive. “Its like a second home to me,” said Steve, who has played in multiple other bands around town. I sat down with Steve after his set to get an artist’s perspective on the venue.
The stage is known for its good sound, “It’s got great sound, it’s loud,” they have $3 PBRs, and the staff is very easygoing and laid back. Says Steve, “It’s an achievement to play here, it’s a milestone venue.” After getting a local artist’s thoughts on the Hi-Dive, I wanted an “outsider’s” opinion. Not expecting much on a Monday night, I stopped by, and was pleasantly surprised to find a solid line up of good musicians.
Brooklyn, NY, natives, Hospitality, have been on tour, and not only was this the first time they played the Hi-Dive, but it was also their first time in Denver. The east-coast indie-rock band said that the staff was very supportive and easy to work with, and that a small venue with quality sound was a nice surprise. “I like intimate stages; it didn’t feel like a small venue up there, pretty good stage for the size of the club.”
