Interview with I, The Breather
By Max Giffin
On February 7th when Christian metal band I, The Breather played the Summit Music Hall with Texas In July and August Burns Red, drummer Morgan Wright and guitarist Chase Kozlowski hung out after the show to tell about their new album “Truth and Purpose” recently released on Sumerian Records and share a little about themselves. Despite the heavy and energetic set they played earlier in the night, the band was all smiles and laughs as they shared some of their musical inspirations and personal experiences.
CMB: What’s the inspiration for your music?
Morgan Wright: Our inspiration comes from having a strong faith in our lord and savior and a lot of the lyrical inspiration is based on personal experiences. Sean writes about life and death, all his personal experiences that he’s gone through as a young man. I don’t write too much anymore vocally but he kind of takes the reign for that. You can really tell personal problems and experiences he’s been through on this new CD.
CMB: If you could have any exotic pet, what would you have?
Chase Kozlowski: I would have a cheetah because I love cheetahs and they’re just awesome animals.
MW: I would choose a platypus because when I was in 3rd grade I did a report on the platypus and fell in love with that animal.
CMB: Do you have a favorite song to play live?
MW: Yeah I do, my favorite one at the moment on this tour is “Bruised and Broken”. It’s our brand new single from the record titled “Truth and Purpose” that comes out Feb. 28th.
CMB: What’s the most interesting fan comment you’ve ever gotten?
MW: There have been a lot of weird things that have been said but I can’t remember off the top of my head. It’s always cool when fans even come up and talk to us. We all appreciate that.
CK: This was like a few show ago, a fan came up and asked if he could have my guitar. I told him no.
CMB: Was he surprised?
CK: Yeah, he was. He was surprised I said no.
CMB: I would have been shocked; can I not have your guitar?
CK: You can, it’s all yours.
CMB: What are the hardest and most rewarding parts of being on tour?
MW: The hardest parts are definitely the drives, like last night we had a 20 hour drive from San Francisco to here. The most rewarding part is seeing fans come out to your shows and jump in singing along then wanting to meet you after your set. It’s always a humbling experience.
CK: I’d say the hardest part about being away is being away from your loved ones at home like your girlfriend, friends, and family. Then the most rewarding is just playing for fans every night that enjoy it and appreciate it. We put a lot into it and it’s good to get something back.
CMB: So a fan requested I ask you this, who is “breathing” and who is “I”?
MW: I’d say I’m probably the “breathing” part because I’m back there giving so much air and energy. I’d say Chase is the “I”.
CK: I’m the “I”.
MW: The “The” would have to be Shawn. Chase is the “I” though.
CMB: Do you have a zombie apocalypse plan?
MW: Yes I do. My friends and me are prepared for the zombocolypse. We’re gonna build a shelter underground, stock up on supplies at Walmart and get as many guns as we can. Just be prepared, you know? Everyone should be prepared. What about you, do you have a plan?
CK: I plan on being like Woody Harrelson in Zombieland: just having guns and driving a hummer around, just hitting zombies with my door when I go by. I think it’d be pretty sweet. So that’s my plan. Whatever he did in Zombieland, I wanna do that.
CMB: You guys might want to take Texas In July with you. They aren’t prepared.
MW: They aren’t? Nope, you know what that’s too many people in our shelter. We can’t have that in our camp. I’m sorry. I don’t want that. That’s tough luck for them; we’re gonna stick with us five.
CMB: Do you have any closing thoughts?
MW: I’d just like to say thank you for conducting this interview with us and check out our new CD that comes out Feb 28th via Sumarian Records titled “Truth and Purpose”. That’s it, peace.
