Kansas City band Bent Left Release New Record, Rock 3 Kings Tavern Nov. 23
by Tim Wenger
Kansas City punkers Bent Left head into 3 Kings Tavern on Friday, November 23, fresh off the release of their new full length album Faberge. The album, in the tradition of Bent Left, covers pertinent social topics, this time focusing on “the fragile nature of power and influence.”
The band recorded and produced the recorded over the course of the early summer, with the official release happened on Tuesday, November 13. “Our buddy Mike Jones, who was the founder of I Hate Punk Rock Records, invested in a building in Maplewood, Missouri,” says Josh Nelson, the group’s drummer. “He converted that into what is now Encapsulated Studios. The building, among other things, houses the reincarnation of I Hate Punk Rock Records, now called Encapsulated Records. “We went into the brand new studio back in June of this year and started work on the full length. We spent about eleven days in June, brought in some scratch recordings, and ironed out a few kinks from the songwriting, and then went at it.”
They finished most of what was needed for the record, but Nelson and guitarist Jeff Speak went back into the studio for a few days the next month to tie the loose ends and make sure the album was at the level they wanted it to be.
The band, with the help of the record label, has pressed 500 limited edition LPs (on three different color patterns) and 1000 cds with custom manufactured jackets. “We have created what we think is the most elaborate DIY record production ever done,” Nelson says. The band left on a four month tour last month, with a stop at 3 Kings Tavern Friday, November 23. On the tour’s first leg, they performed at The Fest in Gainesville, Florida, and then followed hurricane Sandy up the east coast. “We lost a few shows there, but came across some pretty cool opportunities to help out along the way, and see some good friends,” says Nelson. The Denver stop is the first show of the next leg of their tour, following a few days off around Thanksgiving, where they will be throwing a 30 band festival to raise money for a new online radio project they are launching. Info on the festival and the project it is supporting can be found on the band’s website.
