Longtime Denver Music Veterans Stephen Till and Nathen McGarvey to Debut Project at Syntax Physic Opera

Reinvention in the Denver Music Scene: Nathan & Stephen Debut New Band

In the Denver music scene, it seems that reinvention is essential for survival, and that’s exactly what an upcoming show at Syntax Physic Opera is all about. Anyone who’s been around the Denver music scene very long may recognize band names like Black Black Ocean, Nathan & Stephen, Born in the Flood, A Mouthful of Thunder and The Belle Jar.

Well, this show features members from all of those bands who have taken the next step in their musical evolution to create something new and different to share with old and new fans alike.

On November 7 at Syntax Physic Opera, Stephen Till (A Mouthful of Thunder, Nathan & Stephen, Black Black Ocean) and Nathan McGarvey (Nathan & Stephen, Hearts of Palm) will debut their new project HolyFear. While the sound of this collaboration is yet unknown, a source said that they created this band because they “want to rock out again,” which alone is a good enough reason to come check it out.

The Take features Matthew Vermillion and JJ Chamberlain (both of The Belle Jar) along with Jacob Seal and Eric Webb in a new rock band known for an energetic live show with songs drawing on influences from bands like Brand New to Braid to Coheed and Cambria. They are playing in support of their new album “Out to Sea,” which they released on September 27.

And headlining the show is local music veteran Mike Hall (former drummer of Born in the Flood) with his new project Fire & Sigh. After years as a drummer, he realized he had some songs of his own to put out into the world. Fire & Sigh is an acoustic-driven one-man-band with cajon stomp drums that Mike custom designed (and may pursue a patent for). You can definitely expect an entertaining set of solid tunes from this band.

The idea of reinvention even carries over to the venue itself, which is the brainchild of Jonathan Bitz. After five years as the talent buyer at the Meadowlark, Jonathan began a hunt for his own venue – which would eventually become Syntax Physic Opera. Syntax has one of the most unique and classy atmospheres of any venue in Denver. From the Old West artifacts that adorn the walls to some of the best cocktails around, Syntax offers a dining/drinking/entertainment experience not to be missed.
