There are few reasons to drive to Colorado Springs from Northern Denver, such as: speeding 75 mph through a dead zone, the random traffic, people slowing for construction that may or may not be happening. The trek however, was well worth it for a look at East Coast metal core band, Ice Nine Kills and Ukranian screamo group, Make Me Famous; the two of them willing to take a detour to our neck of the hills from Attila’s Party With the Devil Tour that skipped Colorado.
Ice Nine Kills entered the stage to “What Is Love” by Haddaway, a nice ‘90s blast from the past, before launching into “Proimity Mines In the Complex,” “Buildings Burn, People Die,” “Chris Brown’s Latest Hit,” “People Under The Stairs” and other favorites from their album Safe Is Just A Shadow. Ice Nine Kills sent the building into frenzy by playing their much-loved “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and with the audience reciting each word. With little effort by vocalist, Spencer Charnas, “The Greatest Story Ever Told” became the greatest song ever performed.
With less audience enthusiasm, Make Me Famous took the stage to a nice and heavy intro before kicking off the set with “Ifyuocnaraedtihsmkaemeasnadwich,” “It’s Now or Never,” and others from their first album, It’s Now or Never. Despite the band’s spot-on performance with perfect harmonies from vocalist and guitarist, Denis Shaforostov and vocalist, Serj Kravchenko, the crowd seemed bound and determined to make the band suffer for playing good music. At one point, the audience was asked to wish Kravchenko a happy birthday and two girls towards the front of the wooden stage cried out their well wishes while others laughed or pretended like they weren’t told anything. It was hard to watch, but any band with a great sound has to deal with the one or two shows that are attended by people that stick around only to make a band feel unwanted. It should be mentioned that a good majority of Make Me Famous and Ice Nine Kills fan base was partying back in Denver with Pierce the Veil on their sold out headlining Collide With The Sky Tour at the Summit Music Hall.
Despite the poor audience, both bands put their hearts out there, and it was clear through their tenacity to get the crowd moving that they wanted nothing more than to connect with the fans that came to mosh and have a good time. After the show, Charnas shared that the band will soon be releasing a new song, hope to release a new album in 2013, and just may be gracing the stages of the infamous Vans Warped Tour this summer.
