“My, my, how can I resist ya . . .”
My 10-year old daughter and I love singing along to this movie, so when “Mamma Mia!” came to the Buell Theatre, we couldn’t resist. If you don’t know the story, the songs of ‘70s super-group, ABBA, inspire the musical.
Set on a fictional Greek island, single mother, Donna (Georgia Kate Haege), is preparing for her only daughter’s, wedding; daughter Sophie (Chelsea Williams). Sophie is hell-bent on having her father walk her down the aisle; one problem, neither she nor Donna know who her father is. It’s down to three, and unbeknownst to Donna, Sophie has invited all three of them to the island in an attempt to figure it all out.
While close friends and family arrive, this musical story seamlessly ties together the tale of love and friendships, and mothers and daughters. Stealing the show, in my opinion, were Donna’s BFFs, Rosie (Carly Sakolove), and Tanya (Gabrielle Mirabella). Their flamboyance and chemistry had everyone in the packed theater laughing from the moment they “landed” on the idyllic island.
Of local interest, Colorado native, Tucker Worley, hit the stage as “Pepper.” Look him up, and let’s support our local superstar!
The show had a short run here in Denver, but if it comes back, this is a musical to add to your to-do—make that a must-see—list!
