Merchants Mile High Saloon was the place to be for a Great Rap Show
by Brandon Hart
There are many elements that make up a great rap show. The crowd, the atmosphere, the talent, and most importantly the beats and lyrics, and this show definitely had it all. There were a few headliners before the major acts took to the small corner stage at Merchants Mile High Saloon, and man did they rock the house.
Artists from all over the state and all over the country took to the stage to showcase their talents. Styles included a more local dub step/slow rap beat all the way out to a low percussion hard bass New York style beat, as well as many other styles in between.
As the crowd began to shape in the later hours of the night the music kept getting better and better. Even though there were people sitting down they were head bobbin and grooving out to the music in their seats.
One of the most hype acts of the night came all the way from Jackson, MS. A young rapper by the name of L-I-T, whose style was really interesting because not only did he rap to the snare laden 12-Bar beat that’s a staple of southern rap but he was able to change it up and incorporate many other styles as well.
When asked about this he said, “I do all of my own beats and lyrics. Even though I’m from the south I like a bunch of different styles and I like to put that into my stuff.”
That is definitely something not seen in a lot of rappers of today they mostly stick to the styles that they know best. L-I-T’s music is similar to what B.O.B does. A highly skilled technique made this rapper definitely one to watch out for in the future.
J-Nash, a home boy from right here in Colorado, also did a great job blowing up the spot. His music sounded very local. He had a great beat and a very flavorful slow toned rap that paced over his beats very well.
What made him stand out the most was that even though he sounded similar to other Colorado rappers he seemed to bring a little added spice to his rhymes with carefully placed emphasis on certain words and well placed crescendo effects to his beats.
J-Nash’s act was very impressive even though a small crowd was on the floor during his set, the people in and around the bar was definitely happy with the rhymes that this up and coming local boy was putting down.
This Colorado boy is poised to tear the roof off of any venue he plays in the future.
The sleeper pick of the night was most definitely Ken-C. He shook things up by not only rapping to his own beats but putting down solid remixes of current tracks.
After slow playing his skills, talent and just the general fact that he was a rapper in general, he went up on stage kind of quietly and then broke out like that pizza face kid in elementary school. Smoothing over the super hyped crowd with a different unique sound, he came off like a veteran mid-west rap superstar.
All of the rappers at the event were great but these three stood out.
