Mickey Avalon at the Aggie Theatre

On June 19, Mickey Avalon had the Aggie Theatre in Old Town Fort Collins hopping. Opening for Avalon was Seth Abrumz, and last-minute concert addition, Millionaires: A catchy, foul-mouthed electro-pop sister duo. Avalon’s music could best be described as west-coast glam rap, with fun, indulgent, occasionally juvenile, lyrics laid over a driving, danceable beat. He has worked with artists such as Travis Barker of Blink182, Scott Russo of Unwritten Law, Young Jeezy and Lil Jon. His music has been featured in the HBO series “Hung,” FOX’s “American Dad,” and the 2008 motion picture “Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.”
Avalon’s early years were dramatic, to say the least. He was born in Hollywood, CA, where he grew up with a heroin-addicted father and started selling marijuana with his mother at a young age. After marrying and having a daughter, he became addicted to heroin himself in his young 20s. Divorced, broke, and turning to prostitution to support his smack habit, he decided to move in with his sister to get clean. After his sister relapsed and died of an overdose, Avalon decided to return to California. He quickly became friends with ex MTV VJ Simon Rex. Rex encouraged Avalon to pursue his passion for hip hop and handed out demos at nightclubs for him; as Avalon was in a sober living facility and had a strict curfew. Avalon developed a rabid following, and soon after signed with Interscope Records and released his self-titled album. His latest album Loaded was released in late April of this year.
Although the show started off a bit lackluster, with very few people in the crowd, the audience was enthusiastic. As the night wore, on more people trickled in, and by the time Millionaires hit the stage, the crowd was getting obviously pumped. With a set consisting of party anthems such as “The Weekend” and “Just Got Paid, Let’s Get Laid” the girls were obviously having fun. After ending the set with their hit song “Party Like a Millionaire” there was a long break waiting for Avalon, which only seemed to build the crowds anticipation. When Avalon took the stage, the audience was on their feet and grooving while a pretty blonde go-go dancer strutted around behind him, dancing and posing sexily. Avalon was engaging, allowing fans on stage to dance with him and shooting a bottle of champagne into the crowd. He played crowd favorites “Jane Fonda,” “Mr. Right,” “So Rich, So Pretty,” and hit song “My Dick” as an encore.
