Denver locals, the Host Club, have managed to make heartbreak sound happy on their recent two singles, “If You Say No,” and “Bring You Up.” Following in the footsteps of their four-track EP, Tut Tut, Elrod’s voice continues to have an innately soothing affect. There’s comfort food, and comfort music; this is definitely effective when you’re down. Always applicable to some stage of heartbreak that most of us have lived through, “If You Say No” says, “I try to scribble you out like a bad idea.” Yep. Been there. “Bring You Up” is my favorite of the two singles. It talks about that ever-supportive significant person who is willing to do whatever it takes to make you happy. The very catchy chorus of, “I’m gonna bring you up, I’m gonna make you high, I’m gonna make you smile,” will remain with you long after the song has ended. I keep all of their songs ready, you never know when you’ll need to smile in spite of it all.
