Paula Nelson Band on Extended Colorado Run, New Album
by Tim Wenger
Paula Nelson is no stranger to the Centennial State, and for once, the locals have found a road-tripper from Texas that they don’t mind keeping around. For a few weeks at a time, as it were. After starting the Colorado run at the Larimer Lounge on January 11, Nelson heads out on an extended run through Colorado with her band, playing gigs across the state with the wrap up this weekend hitting the Tailgate Tavern in Parker on Thursday, January 16, followed by performances in Colorado Springs and Meeker on Friday and Saturday respectively.
The group will be performing songs from their new record on this tour, as well as many familiar fan favorites. Nelson’s new record is available now. It is a collection of covers from legends like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and many others. “They’re all older songs,” says Nelson. “They’re a lot of great songs that maybe this generation hasn’t heard yet. We did our own interpretation on some of them. “
In addition to spending nearly three weeks in Colorado on this current run, Nelson and her band have some roots here. “I lived up here for a long time so I have a lot of friends and a lot of fond memories,” says Nelson. Her guitar player also has family in Colorado. Paula and the gang also hit Colorado frequently because of the positive reactions they receive. “We seem to get a really good response, and I think it is a really good fit.”
“There is a lot of music in Austin, we’ve played there for many years,” says Nelson. “But we really like coming out this way. There are a lot of people here that we love and that love us back. Austin is great too, and we spend so much time out that it’s kind of nice when we’re back.”
Her previous recorded work was mostly originals, but they were excited to try something new (albeit used) for this new recording. “Usually I write my own songs, but this has a been a great way to stay active,” says Nelson.
“We’re just really proud of the cd, and are excited to being back up here in our old stomping grounds,” says Nelson. Fans can pick up the album in person at the shows, and very soon on iTunes.
