Q & A with Sebastien Schultz from Bad Veins-Playing Hi Dive TONIGHT!!
CMB: For those who aren’t familiar with your music, describe your sound.
BV: Wow—one of the harder/more dreaded questions to answer—and it’s the lead question!
Well, we’re certainly indie-pop, but not afraid to embrace the “pop” side. We’re fans of all sorts of music, but any song that is well constructed will jump out—no matter what the genre. We certainly don’t shy away from arriving at grandiose and anthemic moments in our songs either. Who doesn’t love a good fist-pump at the finale of any piece of music?
CMB: Is this your first time playing in CO?
BV: No, actually we’ve played Denver quite a bit. We’ve been through the Hi-Dive, Larimer Lounge, Marquis, Ogden – we also played Monolith Music Festival at Red Rocks a few years back. So, yeah, we’ve been through – we love Colorado!
CMB: The Mess We’ve Made is your 2nd full-length CD?
BV: Yep – album #2. We had a self-titled debut followed by an E.P. – happy to now be putting out the follow-up.
CMB: What is something unique to your performances?
BV: Well, it’s only the two of us (Schultz and Benjamin Davis) on stage—and we have a lot of orchestration in our songs—so in order to replicate that sound on stage, we use our 1973 reel-to-reel player. Her name is Irene and she’s our “unofficial” third member. She’s been with us since the start—I don’t know what we’d do without her.
Beyond that, Ben has a megaphone he’ll sing through from time to time, as well as a telephone that is used on some songs. It’s all quite entertaining!
CMB: Is there a song, or songs, you hope fans will react to off the new album?
BV: We’re both very proud of the new album—the result of months being locked in the studio—so I hope all of the new material stands out in some regard with everyone. That said (and as answered above), we’ve had the pleasure of playing Denver quite a bit and been lucky to gain some fantastic fans with songs that were around long before we recorded the new album—those songs won’t being going away either. I would say we hope fans react well to both the old and new—have our cake and eat it, too (although Marie Antoinette never said that) just saying . . .
CMB: Here’s your time to shine—tell us something you think we’d be interested to know about you!
BV: I have a puppy named Indiana Jones. He’s pretty awesome.
Bad Veins will be at the Hi Dive with We Were Promised Jetpacks, TONIGHT 3-19-12!! And check out The Mess We’ve Made when it’s released on 4/24/12.
