SHINY TOY GUNS-Tour with the Dirty Heads
Los Angeles electro-rock band SHINY TOY GUNS recently released their latest album III this past October via Five Seven Music, which features the first new material by the original line-up in five years and the first single, “Somewhere To Hide.”The quartet teamed up with legendary mixer Tony Maserati (Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys) to finalize and sharpen the new 2012 sound of the band. Unlike any other group out there today, SHINY TOY GUNS music is driving rock and electro spearheaded by a male and female vocal courtesy of Chad Petree and Carah Faye. TheAssociated Press listed III among their Top 10 Albums of 2012, noting “the year’s best dance and electronic-based album…the foursome sounds better than ever over beats that are addictive and vibes that are dreamy” (Mesfin Fekadu, 12/21/12). SHINY TOY GUNS, whose pioneering synth-pop and DIY ethic made them worldwide sensations, first propelled into the spotlight with their hits “Le Disko” and “You Are The One” from their 2006 Grammy-nominated debut release, We Are Pilots.
CMB had a chance to ask them some questions about their first album in four years.
CMB: This is your first album in four years after a band “break up,” was it easy to find that connection again?
STG: The band never actually broke up, we just went through a different period in our life-timeline vibe. It wasn’t the original members of the band; one of our two singers wasn’t in the band at the time so we recorded with someone else. Finding the original connection again? It was like nothing ever changed. It was beautiful.
STG: Well it’s very complicated. Some things have changed a lot. Some things haven’t. Relationships are very difficult in life, whether it be very personal or very business. In our case, its like going into business with your wife (which you should NEVER do), so it’s a challenge for all of us. But we are making due the best we can, having fun playing music for all of our friends, loved ones and fans, and learning to love on each other in the process.
STG: The re-ignition process. It’s a slow crawl, but we can feel it. And it feels like magic 🙂
CMB: I hear a lot of ’80s influence in your songs, who are/were your influences while writing the music?
STG: On this new record, as in our older ones, we really don’t have the music around us influence our stuff. I could listen to dubstep for 39,248 hours in a row, and still sit down and probably the first thing that would come out is a tear-jerking synth power ballad. What comes into our records is just a circulatory reflex. It’s there now, and it has always been there; and always will.
CMB: What do you want people to know about STG?
STG: Well, honestly? That we made a very personal and powerful album. We know so many of our fans have no idea we just put a record out. It’s a different world being on an indie label who doesn’t spend zillions on mass media. Hell, no one really does anymore. We are excited every moment someone discovers us, or re-discovers us, all over again. We can’t wait till the numbers are in force, then we could possibly start a world army and do awesome shit. Like, remote-controlled volcanoes that spit glitter lava all over things.
