The Crags- Long Shadow Day
by Dana Mastrangelo
The Crags offer Durango mountain town locals and tourists a unique concert, contrary to the countless bluegrass or funk shows they’ve grown to expect on a Friday night. The four piece band has a straightforward, seriously catchy sound, creating a successful balance between the genres of surf, rockabilly, and alternative country. Songwriter Tracy Ford’s rich rhythm guitar and powerful, expressive vocals demonstrate her experience as a front woman, while lead guitarist Tim Lilyguist masters the touch of country twang with seductive, driving solos.
The group’s latest album Long Shadow Day, released February 28, has a collective and mature sound, recorded clean and high quality. Upbeat tracks such as “BABY N WINE” features a radio friendly sound with optimistic, sprightly spirited melodies you welcome to get stuck in your head, while tracks such as “LAME” and “I REMEMBER YOU” have a contemplative, heavy hearted poeticism that is so specific to female fronted rock. Regardless of the tone, The Crags compile a traditional, time-honored yet original sound that inevitably demands dancing.
