The Stubby Shillelaghs- Uisce Beate: The Water of Live
by Tim Wenger
First off- the intro track to Uisce Beata: The Water of Live, the new live album from The Stubby Shillelaghs, is a winner in itself. Any band that takes the opportunity to throw a nice jab at EDM and frat boys in front of a live audience is by default a friend of mine. Moving on to the songs themselves, this high-energy Celtic band known for raucous live shows does a fabulous job of capturing the energy they bring to the stage. What they manage to do very well, a trait that often seems to be missed in many American-based renditions of Irish music, is allow their stories to be the main focus of the music. Sure, whiskey-fueled dancing and bagpipe cheers are flowing. But the Shillelaghs demonstrate with this record that they have an ability to hold a crowd’s focus through the music itself.
This album is a must-listen this month especially, but will do the trick any time you feel the need to raise a glass of Guiness and let out a couple good cries of “HEY!”
