Touring to support Stars and Satellites, Trampled by Turtles pays a visit to Denver
Trampled by Turtles is Dave Simonett, Tim Saxhaug (bass, vocals), Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), Erik Berry and Ryan Young (fiddle).
CMB: For those who haven’t heard your music, please describe your sound?
TBT: We have been described as non-traditional bluegrass; that is the easiest way to describe it.
CMB: How long have you guys been playing together?
TBT: We started back in February of 2003, this is our 9th year together. Most of us have been in the band the whole time, but we added our fiddle player in 2007.
CMB: You’re playing at the Boulder Theatre on May 17, and at the Ogden on May 18, with an appearance at Twist and Shout.
TBT: We will be doing a performance around 6pm at Twist and Shout.
CMB: What is your favorite venue to play in Colorado?
TBT: Colorado was the first state that we toured to besides the surrounding region. We have played all over the state, but my personal favorite was playing the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Not too many stages have views of 14,000 foot mountains. That whole festival is amazing, and we were honored to be asked to play it.
CMB: Where did the name Trampled by Turtles come from?
TBT: Our mandolin player Erik came up with the name as a joke. We wanted a name that didn’t sound too traditional. That was the winner. There weren’t many other options. I’m really sorry there isn’t a better story for that question. We’ve been trying for 9 years to come up with something better.
