March 22, 2015. Wasteland Hop just returned from their second SXSW, playing four showcases and proudly representing Colorado via The Colorado Music Party, SpokesBUZZ, the City of Fort Collins and Boomtown. Despite the theft of their bassists’ gear just weeks before the trip to Austin, Wasteland Hop continued on with a rallying cry of “You can’t stop us!” and are especially thankful for the huge amounts of community support they received. Now that they are home, the band is gearing up for two Denver shows. On Saturday, March 28th, they are headlining the Bluebird Theater with Denver acts HR People Sarah and the Meanies, and Steel & Colfax. Taking a departure from the usual late-night shows, Wasteland Hop is donating their day on Sunday, March 29th to perform at the Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. The band members will spend the day playing private, in-room acoustic sets for children who are too sick to leave their rooms, and end the day with a one hour concert for all children, their families, and hospital staff. The band members have all been musicians since childhood and enjoy working with youngsters to cultivate a love of music, in addition to “…wanting to give back to our amazing Colorado community.” Saturday March 28 at The Bluebird Theater in Denver. $5 pre-sale tickets, $15 day of, 16+, music starts at 9pm.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Wasteland Hop carves a unique space into your imagination, a space where one feels the soulful pourings of Janis Joplin interlaced with the cerebral speech of Aesop Rock. This live 6 piece band designs a new, original sound via violin, guitars, drum and bass plus the potent back and forth energy between leading vocalist Steph Jay and MC Mickey Kenny. Wasteland Hop has played with Flobots, Air Dubai, Zion I, Talib Kweli and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Wasteland Hop played SXSW 2014 & 2015 as part of the Colorado Music Party. Scene Magazine ran a cover story in January 2014 calling Wasteland Hop the “leading talent in The Fort.” Greta Cornett of The Bohemian Foundation sees the band as one on the cusp, saying Wasteland Hop “are poised to take that next big leap.”
HR People. A Rock & Roll, Hip Hop, Soul outfit from Denver, CO. The group draws upon driving guitar riffs, dynamic vocal composition, and high-energy live performance to create a new spin on hip-hop music. Some of their primary influences include The Black Keys, Atmosphere, and Jack White.
Sarah and the Meanies. A soul rock/pop group from Denver Colorado. Life, love, anger, and desire are all themes described in her honest lyrics, as experienced through moving from city to city. Sarah’s style has matured thus so into an urban, slightly southern, and painfully earnest soulful sound. Influences include Otis Redding, Grace Potter, Lorde, The Alabama Shakes.
Steel & Colfax. A four piece rock & motown band based out of Denver, CO. Consisting of four members from different musical backgrounds, S&C has found a sound all their own. Fifties and Sixties rock, southern blues and Motown have influenced the band heavily.
